Where is Tortuguero National Park?

Tortuguero National Park is located on Costa Rica’s northern Caribbean coast. The region is known for its rainforest, beaches, wetlands, wildlife, and extensive network of freshwater canals.

Can you drive directly to Tortuguero?

No. There are no roads leading directly to Tortuguero, so the final part of the journey must be completed by boat.

If you are traveling in your own vehicle, you can drive as far as the La Pavona or Caño Blanco dock. The dock used for each departure is determined one day before the tour because it may vary depending on weather, river levels, and other operating conditions.

Passengers traveling in their own vehicles will receive the confirmed dock location and meeting instructions one day before departure. At the designated dock, you will park their vehicle and wait for our tour group arriving from San José.

Secure parking is available at both docks for approximately $20 USD per vehicle, per night. Parking fees are not included in the tour price and must be paid directly at the parking facility.

From the dock, passengers will join the group and travel by boat through the rivers and canals to the assigned lodge in Tortuguero. Depending on the selected route and environmental conditions, this scenic boat journey may take up to two hours.

Is the turtle nesting tour included in vacation packages?

The turtle nesting tour is generally an optional nighttime excursion and must be reserved separately. The principal nesting season runs from late June through mid-October.

After the nesting season, especially from late October onward, visitors may have an opportunity to witness baby turtles emerging from their nests and making their way toward the Caribbean Sea. Both nesting and hatching are natural events and cannot be guaranteed.

Elusive animals such as jaguars are much more difficult to encounter because of their secretive behavior and natural habitat. Although a jaguar sighting is rare, it is not impossible, and visitors have occasionally been fortunate enough to observe one in the region.
